What to Do When Facing ‘Glue Does Not Dry’ in Laminated Products? Step-by-Step Analysis for Adhesive Application

'Glue Does Not Dry’ is a common issue frequently reported by customers during the application of adhesives, which is attributed to the “quality” problem of the adhesive itself.

1. Manifestation of the “Glue Does Not Drying” Phenomenon

The phenomenon of “glue does not dry” typically presents in the following scenarios after the completion of the curing process in lamination products:

  (1) For two-layer laminated/composite products:

①The entire adhesive layer does not dry (both areas with ink and areas without ink).

②The adhesive layer in areas with ink does not dry as a whole.

③The adhesive layer in areas without ink does not dry as a whole.

④The adhesive layer corresponding to individual ink layers shows partial non-drying.

Stripe-like distribution of the “glue does not dry” phenomenon.

⑥Some laminate webs exhibit the entire adhesive layer not drying, while other laminate webs show the adhesive layer has completely solidified.

  (2) For multi-layer laminated/composite products:

① All adhesive layers exhibit non-drying as a whole.

② Only one layer of adhesive shows non-drying as a whole.

③ Only the surface layer with ink shows partial non-drying.

④ Only the adhesive layer corresponding to individual ink layers on the surface layer shows partial non-drying.

⑤ Only the adhesive layer without ink on the surface layer shows partial non-drying.

⑥ In multi-layer laminate products with PA or Al as the intermediate layer, one of the adhesive layers on the PA or Al side shows non-drying as a whole.

⑦ In multi-layer laminate products with PA or Al as the intermediate layer, both adhesive layers on the PA or Al side show non-drying as a whole.

⑧ Stripe-like distribution of the “glue not dry” phenomenon between any two layers.

2. Steps to Identify the Causes of “Glue Does Not Dry”

When dealing with the issue of “glue does not dry”, the following steps should be taken for data collection and analysis:

① Identify the conditions or circumstances under which the “glue does not dry” phenomenon is observed.

② Determine which scenario the “glue does not dry” phenomenon falls under.

③ Examine the curing conditions that the lamination product with the “glue does not dry” phenomenon has undergone.

④ Measure the degree of “glue does not dry” (the value of “secondary sticky”).

⑤ Analyze the time-dependent changes in the sticky of the adhesive layer when the samples with the “glue does not dry” phenomenon are peeled and left in an open environment.

⑥ Analyze the time-dependent changes in the sticky of the adhesive layer when the samples with the “glue does not dry” phenomenon are placed back in the curing room or an electric oven.

⑦ Check the uniformity of the temperature in the curing room.

⑧ Compare the actual temperature in the curing room with the temperature indicated by the temperature controller.

⑨ Examine the specific solvent diluent formula for certain ink colors.

⑩ Evaluate the equipment status of the drying unit on the glue-mixing machine of the solvent-free dry laminate machine.

⑪ Assess the application of desiccant on the glue-mixing machine of the solvent-free dry laminate machine.

⑫ Evaluate the environmental conditions in the printing and laminating/composition production workshop.

⑬ Examine the quality of acetic acid ethyl acetate solvents.

⑭ Evaluate the protection and storage conditions of hygroscopic substrates.
